Our Programs

brain injured child treatment The Institutes teaches parents how to evaluate and treat their brain-injured child at home. From the Home Study Program to the Intensive Treatment Program, the objective is to help brain-injured children develop physically, intellectually and socially so that they may one day live among peers, not in special schools or institutions.

Todd - The Story of a Brain-Injured Child

David Melton (The Institutes Press)

Todd is a book by a father about his son. It is at once a mystery story, a story of war against brain injury and a gentle love story full of compassion, humor and most of all, courage. It is the best kind of story-a real one- with a real-life mom and dad, daughter and son, who have a monumental problem to solve-brain injury.

As do wonderfully strong, courageous families everywhere, they share the fears, the joy, the tears, the anger and frustration, the laughter, the failures and, of course, the small victories which every day bring them closer together, and closer to making Todd well.

When Todd Melton was born, his parents sensed that he was not normal. Nancy Melton's desperate conviction that something was very wrong with her child and her attempts to convince the professional establishment of it were met with only casual reassurance and jokes about worried mothers. But it soon became apparent to all that something was badly amiss. The older Todd got, the greater the gap between himself and his chronological peers became. Todd was slowly being eliminated as a functioning member of society in a demanding, uncompromising world. His was now a world of "special" education and continually discouraging medical reports.

The Meltons then heard of The Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential and Glenn Doman and there they found more than hope-they found a program that worked.

In this new, updated edition of Todd, the reader learns of Todd's life today, as well.

The Institutes Developmental Profile

The Institutes Developmental Profile is a delineation of the significant stages of child brain development through which normal children pass as they progress from birth to the achievement of sophisticated functions unique to man at six years of age, as this is reflected in progressive brain development.

In the past, it has been believed that this progression is a predestined and unalterable fact as a result of predetermined genetic inheritance superimposed upon a rigid schedule of time and sequence.

The work of the staff of The Institutes from 1940 to the present time has shown this to be untrue and that the order in which the significant stages take place is a function of brain development as successively higher brain stages are brought into play. The time schedule is highly variable and depends not upon predetermined genetic factors but rather upon the frequency, intensity and duration of the stimuli provided to the brain by the child's environment which is notably-and most often-his family.

We feel that the goal of dealing with children must be to take each child through these stages of normal development in their normal order and with the greatest possible speed consistent with perfection. This Developmental Profile represents that progression against which we measure his progress.
